Monkeys, chimpanzees, Gorillas Are At High Risk Of Covid-19

All eyes are on the growing number of deaths in the global Corona epidemic. That number has now crossed the million. But animal experts are worried for another reason. That is, in the animal kingdom, our species is very close to the endangered species, that is, the apes are also at great risk. They are also easily infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19 infections.

Recent studies have shown that about 400 species of vertebrates, including birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, may be infected with the corona virus. At risk, however, are endangered species of primates, notably the white-cheeked gibbon, the Sumatran orangutan, the western lowland gorilla, and the endangered chimpanzee and bonobo. The main reason for this is their extensive genetic similarity with humans.

Infected people can spread the corona virus to other parts of the world where wild animals come in contact with humans. And that's really bad news for these endangered species.

Corona is at serious risk for 16 species of Old World Primate (monkey) and Great Apes. And primates who live in groups with their families are also at risk.

For example, gorillas in East Africa live with small families. They live very closely. And they are being attacked and dying at exactly the same rate as humans. Worryingly, the number of these gorillas is only 5,000. Thus, if the virus is infected, they may soon become extinct.

Experts advise taking precautionary measures in African national parks to prevent corona infection. National Park staff have been advised to take steps to conduct regular tests and observations. Because they are the ones who are most likely to cause wildlife infections. Therefore, zoos have been urged to adopt strong management and planning.
